FROM: ROCK CITY NEWS, LOS ANGELES, VOL 18, NO 20

First of all, I want to invite you all to my birthday party on Saturday, October 7, at the Classroom. I am celebrating my first anniversary of hitting the half-century mark. Stoney Curtis will be performing, as you might have guessed. Deacon Jones, the Hammond B-3 guy, is going to sit in on the keyboard for awhile and perhaps some other special guests. The Classroom is the Valley’s only blues roadhouse. It is in Northridge at Tampa and Roscoe. I will see you there.
Stoney Curtis has been burning up the stages recently. On September 26 he opened for April Wine at the House of Blues and proved that he belongs with the big time and the best. HOB invited the band back on Tuesday night, October 3 to do two hours for a private party. September 20, the SCB played at B.B. Kings; and September 22, at a great venue in Lancaster called Dr. Jeckels. Dr. Jeckels has a wet t-shirt contest at midnight every Saturday night which is a lot of fun. In addition, they sell the best steaks in town as my son and I can attest to. Say “Hi” to Craig, the owner, if you stop by. Dr. Jeckels is located on Tenth West. If you get a chance, check out the Stoney Curtis website at www.stoneycurtis.net.
I had a chance to check out a band called Just Dave and the New Family at B.B. Kings. Just Dave is a young harp player who is very impressive. He had a great band including Lawrence Baulden on the bass. Lawrence played bass for King Ernest, as I’m sure you know. Lawrence may be the outstanding blues bassist in Los Angeles. Check out Just Dave if you get a chance. He’s playing at the Classroom on October 27. He also has a new booking agent, Paula Cook, who can be reached at (562) 696-0662.
The night I saw Just Dave at B.B. Kings, I ran into Russell Luzio, “the world’s only deaf radio disc jockey” as he will readily tell you. Russell told me that he has a new radio show on the Internet on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. at http://www.adrenalineradio.com. Check it out if you love good blues music.
Russell gave me a CD of a new artist named Corliss. The CD is quite good. Corliss is a singer in the B.J. Sharpe, Zaidee Cole, Sista Monica mold. The CD is pretty good and the lady can really sing. The CD, recorded live at B.B. Kings, has a few slow ballads, such as Summer Time sung more the way George Gershwin planned it I suspect than the way Janis Joplin sang it, but very good in any event. Corliss sings God Bless the Child by Billy Holiday and I Got It Bad by Duke Ellington. The second half of the CD is your basic raunch which comes off pretty good. One song is I’m So Horny, I Haven’t Had A Man Since 1910.
Another great band I have had a chance to see is the Delgado Brothers. The brothers, Bob, Joe and Steve, are Hispanic from East Los Angeles and damn proud of it. Their music is down home blues and really good. Steve, the baby of the brothers, writes the bulk of the music. He also sings the bulk of the music and plays the drums. Their latest CD, Let’s Get Back, has a couple of very moving, poignant songs – Church of El Monte and No Regrets. The Church of El Monte is a hand-clapping family anthem about the family home where they held jam sessions as kids in the early ‘70s. You can almost taste mother Belle’s tamales listening to the song. There is a crowd of people in the background of the song having a great time. I got a chance to visit the Church of El Monte and watched the Delgado Brothers practice for an upcoming gig on a blues cruise. The other song is No Regrets, written by Steve Delgado, about the father of Conga drums, player Ray Solis. You probably gotta’ be my age to really appreciate that song – live your life with no regrets. That’s what Ramon (Ray’s father) told Steve Delgado the night before he died.
Go see the Delgado Brothers if you get a chance. Their CD is produced by John Juke Logan of Mocombo Records. Check out their website at http://mocomborecords.com. Juke is a harp man extraordinaire. His latest album, Juke Rhythm, features fourteen, new, characteristically provocative Logan originals. There are guest performances by some of JukeÕs well-known & talented friends.
