Namm Show 1998 PAGE 1 From Thursday thru Sunday, the place rocked with the sound of thousands of guitars, drums, and people on the go, and if you made it to the Gibson booth, the jingle jangle sound of a totally rocking casino! Black Jack tables, Roulette wheel, craps table, and a big spin wheel where prizes were given away every hour on the hour! Visitors were given a handful of chips which could be cashed in for raffle tickets.Gibson went all out for this one, and not only did they have the rockinest rooms, but the rockinest party as well. Friday and Saturday on the Sunset Strip, the Gibson and Epiphone had the place rockin' like a hurricane (El Nino) with such bands as Slash's Blues Band, Eric Sardinas, Little Feat, and more! Here's how the show went: Thursday afternoon, L.A. convention Center: This place was huge with a capital H! Thousands of venders everywhere, The Ernie Ball Bus looked like an ant in the South Hall, which had another hall just as big underneath it. WeÕre talking football fields! It was like a gigantic music store and festival all together. The Gibson Booth was the coolest, with their many divisions, a small soundstage, and a Casino with Casino Master Rich Bartle announcing the celebrities, spinning the prize wheel, and giving away the great Gibson prizes. First the guy from Los Lobos came by to talk to the Gibson entourage, and he really is a jolly good fellow. Then Bobby Carradine came by to roll a few dice and Randy Travis came in to visit the Gibson guys, check out the Gibson acoustics, sign autographs, and everybody got a chance to shake his hand. The guitar player from the Wallflowers was on hand to talk to fans and sign autographs all day, and Eric Sardinas kept boppin in and out of the casino all day, cowboy hat and pointed burns, he was rockstar from the day he was born and all the high rollers (execs) from Gibson, Slingerland, Epiphone, Tobias, Oberheim, Custom Acoustic, Gibson Accessories, Banjos, and all the other various made in the USA branches of Gibson were on hand to kick off the first day of Namm. Friday afternoon Back at the Gibson Casino Gilby Clarke came by early to sign autographs and try his luck at the blackjack tables, and soon after Slash showed up to pay his respects to the kings of guitar makers, posing for pictures with his classic Les Paul. Can you imagine Slash with anything but? Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath dropped by to sign autographs, and everyone lined up to get one. Vivian Campbell was also on hand to sign autographs, and Bruce Kulick, KissÕs other guitarist, showed up too, and we got a pic of him with his Les Paul as well. Friday, 10 pm Whisky Back In Black, the local AC/DC tribute was in full swing shaking the building to the rafters, the loudest band on earth, these guys play the songs better than the originals and Shawn, Johnny, Dave Marshall, and Anthony Focx are probably the best hard rock musicians in Hollywood! 11:00 Roxy: It was Epiphone night tonight, and Jazz rocker Nick Colionne was really shaking um down with his fancy fingerwork , Elvis outfit, and an array of unbelievable Epiphone guitars that played so easy and sounded so good. At the Whisky John Butcher was playing his acoustic rock, with a little help from his friends, and later at the Roxy, Mighty Joe Plum brought out the country rockers with his mighty blues 12:30 Whisky Little Feat acoustic were playing all those old songs you may or may not remember, and they sounded just like they did when I was in High School. The crowd really loved them, packing the front and cheering their every song. It sounded really good, almost like the whole band, and was more electric than acoustic, bringing a wave of good cheer throughout the crowd. 1:00 Rainbow Bar and Grill My friends from out of town has disappeared earlier, so a trip to the Rainbow was in order to track them down. Sure enough, there they were, half plastered and having the time of their life, as people tend to do here, and so we hung out for awhile, and then hung out some more in the parking lot watching all the hot babes till it was time to go. What a night. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 |
