I found the following tools very handy: (I couldn't live without them)
The electrically powered wire brush wheel cleaning thing for cleaning locomotive wheels
Track cleaning cars with the abrasive thing. Don't get the liquid kind. the wetness on the track causes the grime to come off the wheels of the cars which makes things even worse.
The magnifing glasses that mount on your head!
Good track nippers, a good strong plyers with a precise grip. a small hammer.
