 Beach Information

Special Comments: Tourmaline is a very popular surfing destination for longboarders due to its long, gently rolling waves. In addition, during large swell conditions Pacific Beach Point can generate some exhilarating waves. Because beginners and older longboarders tend to favor the waves at Tourmaline, the beach crowd is composed mostly of families and the beach scene is more laid back than Pacific Beach or Mission Beach.

During low tide there are excellent tidepools among the boulders along Pacific Beach Point on the north end of Tourmaline.

The only negative thing that can be written about Tourmaline Surfing Park is that it is too often subject to beach closures due to sewage spills. For information on beach closures contact the San Diego Lifeguards or San Diego County Environmental Health at 619/338-2073.

There are a few basic rules to remember when visiting Tourmaline to help everyone have a safe and enjoyable time.

1. Alcohol may be consumed but only between the hours of noon and 8 p.m.

2. You may have your dog on the beach but only before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m. During permitted hours dogs must be leashed at all times, and don't forget to clean up after your pets.

3. Fires are permitted on the beach but must be contained either in a city-provided concrete fire square or in an approved container that keeps the fire high enough above the ground so the sand does not become dangerously hot.

4. Glass beverage containers are never permitted on any San Diego beach.

Food/dining: There are no restaurants in the immediate vicinity but the restaurants of Bird Rock on La Jolla Boulevard to the north and the restaurants of North Pacific Beach along Mission Boulevard to the south are a short drive or a long walk from Tourmaline.

Restrooms: Public restrooms with cold showers are located on the west end of the Tourmaline parking lot.
