 Beach Information

Special Comments: Usually the least crowded of the San Diego strand beaches, South Mission Beach has several unique sport-oriented attractions to offer. There are two quality outdoor basketball courts north of the parking lot. There are also a number of sand volleyball courts north of the parking lot and farther north along the seawall. The north Mission Bay Channel jetty is adjacent to the parking lot and is a popular location for fishing for bass, halibut and other species.

In addition to the excellent fishing off the jetty, divers can take lobster, in season of course, from the many nooks and crannies along the jetty rocks. Remember, fishing licenses are not required for line fishing from jetties and piers.

The surf along the north Mission Bay Channel jetty is very good but can become crowded. Locals jealously guard the surf peak next to the jetty but there are several other quality peaks farther north of the jetty.

South Mission Beach is a great location for swimming and boogie boarding. The swim zone starts north of the South Mission Beach lifeguard station. Pay attention to the location of the black-and-yellow checkered flag. On San Diego beaches the lifeguards use this flag to delineate between a surf zone and a swim zone.

There are several rip currents that flow consistently at South Mission Beach. Ask lifeguards about the safest places to swim.

On Sunday evenings South Mission Beach becomes very crowded, as it is a popular weekly gathering place for young people.

Food/dining: The only places to get food in the South Mission Beach area are the Pennant and the Beach Comber, each of which is a bar and grill, and Ace Liquor and Deli, all at Mission Boulevard and San Gabriel Place about 11 blocks north of the South Mission Beach parking lot.

Restrooms: There is one public restroom on the west end of the parking lot. Restrooms are also located at Mission Point on the bay side of the strand across from South Mission Beach.
