 Beach Information

Special Comments: La Jolla Shores is San Diego's most family-friendly beach. The large grassy areas of Kellogg Park located behind La Jolla Shores provide ample space for children to run and play. There is an excellent playground near the boardwalk about 75 yards south of the Lifeguard Station. Adding to the pro-family atmosphere of La Jolla Shores and Kellogg Park is a complete ban on alcoholic beverages.

The surf at La Jolla Shores is generally smaller than anywhere else in San Diego, especially toward the south end of the beach. The south end is a safer place for small children to swim and boogie board, and surfing is not allowed.

The swim zone at La Jolla Shores extends as far north as approximately the middle of the parking lot but can shift based on crowds and conditions, so look for the black-and-yellow checkered flag. The north end of the beach toward Scripps Beach and Pier can have excellent surf.

Because of its small surf, gently sloping beach and relatively clear water, La Jolla Shores is a very popular destination for scuba diving classes and beginning divers. One of the more spectacular dive locations at La Jolla Shores is to the rim of the south arm of the La Jolla Submarine Canyon, which can be reached in 60 feet of water about 200 yards off shore in front of the Marine Room Restaurant at the far south end of La Jolla Shores.

La Jolla Shores has the only beachfront boat launch within the City of San Diego. The boat launch is located at the foot of Avenida de la Playa and is on the sand, so larger boats are not recommended. Try to keep your vehicle out of the water, as it may sink in the sand and become stuck. Vehicles are only allowed on the beach for launching and retrieving boats. Vehicles that are left parked on the beach will receive citations.

Swimming is prohibited within the boat launch area. Remember that La Jolla Shores falls within the San Diego La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve. If you plan to fish you need to be familiar with the boundaries of the reserve and be sure you do not put any lines in the water until you are clear of the reserve.

Food/dining: There are several inexpensive restaurants and small grocery stores along Avenida de la Playa two blocks in from the south end of the boardwalk.

Restrooms: Public restrooms and cold showers are located at both ends of the beach, 100 yards south and 150 yards north of the lifeguard station. There is also a hot shower and portable toilet just to the south of and behind the Scripps Beach lifeguard station.
