Special Comments: If being buffeted by crashing ocean waves is a not your idea of a day at the beach, then the City of Coronado offers two excellent, family-friendly parks on San Diego Bay. Tidelands Park and Glorietta Bay Park both offer both offer excellent facilities including restrooms, playgrounds and picnic tables. Tidelands Park has ball fields and bike paths and Glorietta Bay Park has a public boat launch ramp.

The water off both these parks is always calm and usually a couple of degrees warmer than the ocean. Be advised, however, neither of these beaches has lifeguards. You need to be as cautious and watch your children as closely in calm water as you would on the oceanfront.

For Tidelands Park, take the first right past the bridge toll plaza on Glorietta Boulevard and turn right on Mullinix Drive. To get to Glorietta Bay, continue straight on Third Street and turn left onto Orange Avenue. Continue past the Hotel Del Coronado for about 100 yards. Turn left on Avenida del Sol and then immediately right on Strand Way, the frontage road along the Bay. The park and boat launch are toward the south end of Strand Way.

A trip to Coronado is just not complete without a walk through the historic Hotel Del Coronado. The "Del" is a vacation destination for the rich and famous from all over the world.

The Hotel Del has hosted guests the likes of Ronald Reagan, Frank Sinatra, the Duke and Dutchess of Windsor and Charles Lindbergh. The Del has also been the backdrop of many big-screen and television productions, including "Some Like It Hot" starring Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. The ground level of the hotel, which is open to the public, features pictorial displays that document the Del's many brushes with greatness.

And if you're a golfer, get in some exercise with a round at Coronado Golf Course, one of the best bargains in the area at only $20 for walkers.

Food/dining: Glorietta Bay-area food choices range from moderately priced delis and taco shops to higher-end restaurants. Most are along Orange Avenue between 10th Street and Silver Strand Boulevard.

The nearest food to Tidelands Park is at the Ferry Landing on 1st Street between B and C avenues. The Ferry Landing Market Place offers several fast-food restaurants and sandwich shops. But if you're looking for a more memorable dining experience, try Peohi's, a moderate to high-end restaurant that features fish ponds throughout the dining area and breathtaking views of downtown San Diego across the bay.

Restrooms: Both parks have centrally located restroom facilities.
