Flotsam and Jetsam, Driven By Hate at the Club Mancini By: Sheena Metal Saturday, August 9th was the night. Club Mancni was the place. Flotsam and Jetsam were the headliners. Driven By Hate was the main attraction. The show was an event of sorts É not only a celebration o' DBH playin' the support slot ta' one o' their all time favorite bands, Flotsam, but also the announcement o' their signin' ta' brand new righteous label Carnivorous Records. It was the kind o' night that made ya' think o' the 80's, when L.A.'s music scene was alive 'n' pulsin' with the combined energies o' eager musicians on a fast track ta' stardom 'n' pretentious industry people revelin' in the lushness o' the time. The club was packed tight with a full array o' headbangers. I heard if ya' weren't wearin' black ya' got beat up in the bathroom by some roadie named Skull. Driven By Hate took the stage with a roar from their hundred or so screamin' fans! They played a full set o' tasty tunes from their new CD, filled with macabre overtones 'n' B-tuned riffs. By the time they got ta' their Black Sabbath medley, ten people had whiplash, two guys got concussions by moshin' into each other 'n' a fat girl fainted (It wasn't me, dudes!). Even Club Mancini booker Emma Black got a little roughed up in the raucous pit. This is not music for the pretty. The band members look more like the guys next store who grow pot in their tool shed than a signed band who headlines Los Angeles' hottest clubs. This guys-next-door look, combined with their super tight playin' 'n' slammin' songs is what makes Driven By Hate a standout band at whatever show they play. When the set was done 'n' the band was drenched with sweat, it was time for the Carnivorous Records raffle É. DBH CDs, 'n' the grand prize: a Fender Squier Strat Guitar (signed in gold by the band!) bestowed to winner Andrew Carlosle o' La Habra, CA, by singer Mike Dimon 'n' guitarist Steve Bousquet. Then ta' top off the night, dudes É a ragin' 2-hour set from metal kings Flotsam and Jetsam! What more could any metalhead ask for? This night ruled!!!
